We must become bigger than we have been:
more courageous,
greater in spirit,
larger in outlook.
We must become members of a new race,
overcoming petty prejudice,
owing our ultimate allegiance
not to nations
but
to our fellow men
within the human community.”
Haile Selassie

FEAR + COURAGE

“The best way to predict the future is to invent it.”

X

X

Courage is not the absence of fear,
but rather the assessment that something else
is more important than fear.
Franklin D. Roosevelt

X

I learned that courage was not the absence of fear,
but the triumph over it.
The brave wo/ man is not s/he who does not feel afraid,
but s/he who conquers that fear.
Nelson Mandela

X

Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength,
while loving someone deeply gives you courage.
Lao Tzu

X

You may not always have a comfortable life
and
you will not always be able to solve all of the world’s problems at once
but don’t ever underestimate the importance you can have
because history has shown us
that courage can be contagious
and
hope can take on a life of its own.
Michelle Obama

X

Your time is limited,
so don’t waste it living someone else’s life.
Don’t be trapped by dogma
– which is living with the results of other people’s thinking.
Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice.
And most important,
have the courage to follow your heart and intuition.
Steve Jobs

X

Courage is the most important of all the virtues,
because without courage
you can’t practice any other virtue consistently.
You can practice any virtue erratically,
but nothing consistently without courage.
Maya Angelou

X

Courage is an inner resolution
to go forward
despite obstacles;
Cowardice
is submissive surrender
to circumstances.
Courage breeds creativity;
Cowardice represses fear and is mastered by it.
Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

X

The ultimate measure of a wo/man
is not where s/he stands
in moments
of comfort and convenience,
but where s/he stands
at times of
challenge and controversy.”
Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

X

X

Improvisation is the art of the unexpected.
It teaches us how to take risks
and
to respond confidently
in the moment
to whatever happens.

X

The improviser develops a mindset
that  includes
curiosity,
high stakes listening,
flexibility,
and
the desire to build strong relationships.
Resilience is key.

FEAR + CREATIVITY

X

http://www.forbes.com/sites/work-in-progress/2011/01/07/fear-of-success-and-what-we-learn-from-improv-actors/#7a2d45f613f0
https://hbr.org/1998/09/how-to-kill-creativity
https://www.theatlantic.com/entertainment/archive/2011/09/transcending-fear-in-the-creative-process-5-timeless-insights/244922/
“The empty space is the great horror and stimulant of creation. But there is also something predictable in the way the fear and apathy encountered at the beginning are accountable for feelings of elation at the end. These intensities of the creative process can stimulate desires of consistency and control, but history affirms that few transformative experiences are generated by regularity.
When asked for advice on painting, Claude Monet told people not to fear mistakes. The discipline of art requires constant experimentation, wherein errors are harbingers of original ideas because they introduce new directions for expression. The mistake is outside the intended course of action, and it may present something that we never saw before, something unexpected and contradictory, something that may be put to use.”

X

X

Human freedom involves our capacity to pause between the stimulus and response and, in that pause, to choose the one response toward which we wish to throw our weight. The capacity to create ourselves, based upon this freedom, is inseparable from consciousness or self-awareness.”
Rollo May “COURAGE TO CREATE”

X

Creative people, as I see them, are distinguished by the fact that they can live with anxiety, even though a high price may be paid in terms of insecurity, sensitivity, and defenselessness for the gift of the “divine madness,” to borrow the term used by the classical Greeks. They do not run away from non-being, but by encountering and wrestling with it, force it to produce being. They knock on silence for an answering music; they pursue meaninglessness until they can force it to mean.”
Rollo May “COURAGE TO CREATE”

The seven works now on view at the New York museum include pieces by painter Ibrahim el-Salahi (Sudan), sculptor Parviz Tanavoli (Iran), painter Tala Madani (Iran), architect Zaha Hadid (Iraq), painter Charles Hossein Zenderoudi (Iran), photographer Shirana Shahbazi (Iran), and painter Marcos Grigorian (Russia, of Persian descent).

The artworks were installed in MoMA’s fifth floor galleries on Thursday night, replacing seven artworks by Western artists like Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse. Placards next to each work read:

This work is by an artist from a nation whose citizens are being denied entry into the United States, according to a presidential executive order issued on Jan. 27, 2017. This is one of several such artworks from the Museum’s collection installed throughout the fifth-floor galleries to affirm the ideals of welcome and freedom as vital to this Museum as they are to the United States.

RESURRECTION_PANEL1234_1996_CATHERINELJOHNSONRESURRECTION / EXODUS                                              Catherine L. Johnson  1996
The paintings were commissioned for the USA headquarters of Holtkoetter,
a German manufacturer of chandeliers.

X

To align my creative dive for the pearl,
I asked the President of Holkoetter, a German, to provide me HIS vision.

X

He sang the Hallelujah Chorus from Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony
in German.
It was an extraordinary moment,
I knew what had to be drawn from me:
boundless LIGHT breaking through darkness.

X

I prepared myself like an Olympian,
and
dove deep from the high board
into the sea of my imagination
– where the light of Divinity resides.

X

I aligned all my molecular/cellular energies,
listening and following/listening and following
– and the creation of the original paintings was an act of COURAGE
improvised.
When the paintings were complete- THEY exhaled.
They were now A/LIVE.

X

I was Divinity’s sacred instrument and faithful vehicle.

X

The following is a statement from John Noseworthy, M.D., Mayo Clinic President and CEO.

We value our international staff and partners, and are privileged to train a broad range of medical personnel from around the worldMayo Clinic is a place of compassion, respect and trust, and our collective diversity helps make us the best place to work and receive care. We are actively monitoring the situation, exploring ways to ensure that the needs of our patients and staff are met, and will share new information as it becomes available.”

WHERE ARE OUR SUPERHEROES ?

In modern popular fiction, a superhero (sometimes rendered super-hero or super hero) is a type of costumed heroic character who possesses supernatural or superhuman powers and who is dedicated to fighting crime, protecting the public, and usually battling supervillains.

I LONG TO SEE YOU

I longed to see you BOTH Dorothy and Charles.

X

The drive through the blizzard to satiate my desire to see you
was a winding, snow globe, snow blizzard travel!
The streetlights looked to turn into torches of divine fire
– harkening the sacred and sublime sonics of  you, Charles,
and the collective genius of Bill, Reuben and Eric.
The experience that night was ravishing- sensual and harkened every blessing within to rise.
Every nerve in my body was transformed into conduits
of glistening gold
-filling my heart
and
tenderly caressing my soul.

Thank you.

X

X

X

X

X

Thank you Lowell.
Thank you Nancy for driving through the blizzard, arriving safely
and, then, once all the artists raised their instruments,
we were ALL sent into soaring sonic scintillation
…a hymn of/for life; light; grace and love
and, the blizzard outside stilled.
