HONORING MY UNCLE BOB
X
X
My beloved Uncle Bob
unrepeatable / irreplaceable
Dr. Robert Emil Cottor
X
TAOS INSTITUTE:
7 August 1932 through 7 November 2022
X
X
X
X
X
X
X
My Uncle Bob’s
dedicated love and his capacity
to SEE me
gave me WINGS!
X
X
X
The gaze
of his love
welcomed me,
believed in me.
X
I walked
because
he could SEE me
walking.
X
I created art
because
he could SEE
the divinity,
the rising,
and
the hallelujah offering
of my art
to others.
X
4 October 2022:
Uncle Bob in his room.
His daughter Elizabeth and Aunt Sharon set his room with loving comfort.
My painting was chosen to be WITH him:
Pine Tree: INFINITY 2004*
Photographer: his daughter Suzanne
*
X
He loved and supported
my complexity,
my passionate life force,
and
my courageous life story
– my choices.
X
X
BREATH 1998
The BREATH series of paintings was created when I was mute
in the wake of my Mother’s unexpected and sudden death.
The colors are luminous and evanescent – sacred,
sounding the awe when the soul rises / soars away from the body.
They were not for sale, yet, I knew Uncle Bob would honor the works.
His private collection included nine small BREATH paintings.
I was present when he lovingly with utmost respect and reverence
installed the nine work in his/ Sharon’s home.
X
The set of nine BREATH paintings are now in the home of his daughter / my cousin, Elizabeth.

7 May 2022
Uncle Bob’s 90th birthday
– holding the drawing I sent him to celebrate this milestone!
X
X
X
X
Uncle Bob and I paddled the St. Croix.
We reveled in our outdoor adventures and our dance of our creative minds.
His fierce gentleness as the LION at my gate was profound.
His mischief was marvelous!
Uncle Bob was a paragon of health – an Adonis athlete defying / transcending his polio!
X
I am the late Doris Cottor Johnson Omlie’s second daughter.
Uncle Bob was four years younger than my Mother
– they were once a fast creative team.
Together they created the Christmas pageants
at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Highland Park St. Paul.
Mom was the Director and her brother was the sound / light engineer.
He called her ‘Do’ – sound like ‘dough.
X
Uncle Bob was present
as we adjusted to the tragic
and
sudden death of Daddy at 32.
He came through for us.
He was our FUN / EXCITING young Uncle Bob:
ice skating on Christmas Eve, boating / swimming on the St. Croix,
swimming across Lake Benedict at Pinehurst Lodge, Walker, Minnesota*
– always wearing /copying Uncle Bob’s NOSE PLUGS!
I was in plaster casts so I was the enthusiastic observer and cheerleader!
*Where the Cottor siblings gathered every summer when we were young.
X
His keen truth-tellings were light towers
– breaking through convention and dark shrouds.
He was my mentor, a trusted lantern, and compass.
He held my hand.
X

X
CATHERINE’S COURAGEOUS COMPASSION CIRCLE
A touchstone event: the congenital dysplasia of my right leg joints came
to an irreversible crossroad in the Spring of 1999.
My hip joint was breaking apart.
My orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Rod Peterson, stated it is NOT known IF a total hip replacement would work,
and,
IF the reconstruction does not succeed, you will live in a wheelchair.
You will need to lie back at 120 degrees and keep still for eight weeks.
You will need a committed, cohesive, and reliable support system.
My epiphany response:
I will create CATHERINE’S COURAGEOUS COMPASSION CIRCLE of concentric circles!
The surgery: 26 May 1999
Uncle Bob and Aunt Sharon were in the GOLD ring.
Of course,
Uncle Bob flew out to be WITH me
– quieting me and being my LION at the gate.
Picture: August 1999.
The Cottors welcomed me to rehab WITH them in their Scottsdale home.
Uncle Bob, once again, guided me to rise and walk.
X
X
He is forever the maverick eagle
whose reserved dignity, multi-spheric creativity,
INTEGRITY
radiant humanity, loving kindness
was
a lived Odyssey.
X
Uncle Bob and his beloved, love of his life, Sharon were authentic partners / co-creators
– a goodness of fit
and
a template /legacy of what is an original evolving heal/thy relationship.
X
FIFTIETH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY
Bob and Sharon Cottor
My painting, Pine Tree: Te DEUM, was commissioned by Uncle Bob FOR Aunt Sharon.
A serene offering to comfort her – be a balm.
X
X
He was poem of a man
– an unfolding symphony of benevolence and compassionate courage
will forever live and soar
in
my heart, bone, blood, and breath.
ALWAYS.
ALL WAYS.
X
X
On 11 November,
VETERANS DAY,
a cold overcast Minnesota day,
a mature male eagle
soared and circled overhead
as I biked.
X
I knew the lone eagle,
that GLORIOUS eagle,
was
my Uncle Bob:
the open and wide wing span,
the majesty of the elegiac looping flight,
and
the astounding AWE.
Beautiful.

I lit a

this morning.
The candle burning/flickering bright ALL day.
The scent created a chapel found in a quiet forest.
I tied a chartreuse ribbon
onto Zachary’s collar this morning.
Wearing a chartreuse ribbon
is to honor
the spring green renewal,
the resurgence of eternal prevailing love
– the Jaspar Obi love…

✔✔✔✔ Fourth,
younger voters have learned to show up at midterm elections,
boding well for the health of democracy and progressive values.
The Center for Information & Research on Civic Learning and Engagement at Tufts University
found that “27% of young people (ages 18-29)
turned out to vote in the 2022 midterm election
and helped decide critical races,
wielding the growing power of a generation that is increasingly engaged
even as many remain disillusioned about U.S. politics.”
Again, this didn’t match 2018’s numbers,
when 31 percent of young people voted,
but it is
“likely the second-highest youth turnout rate for a midterm election
in the past 30 years.”
