HOODIES
IN THE HOOD
IN THE HOODIE

On the weekend of the St. Paul Art Crawl,
27/28/29 April 2012,
rather than presenting a visual/sonic art installation
I will have an installation:

STAND YOUR GROUND

FOR

TRAYVON MARTIN

“You know if I had a son,

he’d look like

Trayvon Martin “

President  Barack Obama

INSTALLATION

 The installation
is
a multi- layered inquiry
between
sight and vision:
what one sees/perceives,
the vision of what one believes
and
between
one’s considered action
or
reaction rooted in  one’s hard-wired biases.
+

An installation of hundreds of hoodies
loaned
from  publicly known individuals
 and
 from ordinary individuals
as a means of participation
as
ONE
– lifting one’s voice.
+
The loaned hoodies are to be used,
not laundered
– the scent of humanity.

I request the loaned hoodies to be
white or black or grey
as signifiers:
“color  blind” justice
and
the grey zone of ambiguity,
 overlapping and conflicting
perceptions/filters of truth/ fact.
+
The lights in the long hallway
will be overhead lamps,
spaced in equal intervals,
directed to the ground
and
not spotlighting the hoodie/shrouds
– as if walking down a street in the evening/night.
One’s senses  can become keen at night
if  perceived from fear rather than trust.
All senses are  suddenly honed and magnified
and
an animal,
self defensive instinct
can
seize
calm.
+
Both sides of a long hallway
 in the
Northern Warehouse,
Lowertown,
308 Prince Street, St. Paul, MN
will have hoodies
hung  from the ceiling to the floor
-looking like a shrouds.
A memorial
and
a call out for a civil discourse on
 stereotypes,
bigotry,
hard-wired beliefs
and
practices rooted in fear and hate of the “other”
and a dramatic r/evolution
to authentic
social justice
not just for the dominant culture
– but for ALL.
This moment is an opportunity
to ride it out
and
create a new vision,
an imprint/blueprint
of respect and sanctity
of humanity.
When anyone’s chest is opened:
the heart
is
found/located/identified
in the same place
as
others.
+
The hoods of each hoodie will be positioned to hang down.
There will be a tag affixed on the “chest” on each one.
Red ink on a 4.5″ x 5″ white tag with a string.
The tags will be like the toe tags used in the morgue.
+
The loaner will write in their own handwriting,
in blood red ink:
their
name /city/state/country.
+
Signatures, like voices, are unique and are a  singular”voice”.
The loaner’s own hoodie with  signature voices.
+
The hallway will be a volume of shrouds,
empty of breath and life
-a choir of silent blood red voices.
+
The sonics for the

installation

will be a continuous loop
of the below
Gospel/Classical/R&B
music.

Songs of faith, lament
and
a  bewildered plea/call out for social justice.
a dialectical counterpart that asks
who/what is the function
NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH MAN?

I have  already received an avalanche of response from musicians,
political officials, TV anchors, college students,
teenagers- nationwide and from Canada.
The loaned hoodies will need a complete tag as described above.
The loaners will send
their own
white or grey or black hoodie
with
as self- addressed and self- stamped envelope
for return
OR
indicate give to charity.
My charity of choice is
Harriet Tubman
a Twin Cities haven
for families
of
domestic abuse.

 I WILL PROVIDE
MORE INFORMATION
AND
FURTHER INSTRUCTION
ON MY WORDPRESS
THIS COMING WEEK
AND
I WILL SEND OUT AN E-BLAST.
+
REPEAT:
The

INSTALLATION

is a continuum of my art,

reponding to tragedy.
CALL AND RESPONSE.
Art is a vehicle of the Divine.
HEART.
COMPASSION IS AN ACTION.
Artists must step up.
I always have.
This is LIFT EVERY VOICE…the Black American Anthem
that
 speaks/sings/calls out
to every person
that each and every
person
is
of
intrinsic, irreplaceable, sacred
value.
+
The ceiling to floor of loaned hoodies
hanging
on both sides of a long hallway
in “evening light”
will be a memorial,
an elegy,
and
a call to action to repeal
the murder your neighbor
fueled
with
animosity, hatred, fear,
subconscious or chosen reactions
toward
the
“other”
of
the reprehensible
STAND YOUR GROUND
law.
