The following is a transcript of the remarks of Democratic Illinois Sen. Barack Obama, delivered March 18, 2008, in Philadelphia at the Constitution Center. In it, Obama addresses the role race has played in the presidential campaign. He also responds to criticism of the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, an unpaid campaign adviser and pastor at Obama’s Chicago church. Wright has made inflammatory remarks about the United States and has accused the country of bringing on the Sept. 11 attacks by spreading terrorism.

“We the people, in order to form a more perfect union …” — 221 years ago, in a hall that still stands across the street, a group of men gathered and, with these simple words, launched America’s improbable experiment in democracy. Farmers and scholars, statesmen and patriots who had traveled across an ocean to escape tyranny and persecution finally made real their declaration of independence at a Philadelphia convention that lasted through the spring of 1787.
The document they produced was eventually signed but ultimately unfinished. It was stained by this nation’s original sin of slavery, a question that divided the colonies and brought the convention to a stalemate until the founders chose to allow the slave trade to continue for at least 20 more years, and to leave any final resolution to future generations.

WHOSE STREETS?

HOW THE KILLING OF 18 YEAR OLD MIKE BROWN
INSPIRED A COMMUNITY TO FIGHT BACK.
A PEOPLE’S DOCUMENTARY

 X

Directors’ statement
Sabaah Folayan, Damon Davis
Every day Americans experience a mediascape that humanizes whiteness, delving into the emotional lives of privileged white protagonists while portraying people of color as two-dimensional (and mostly negative) stereotypes. Nowhere was this more apparent than in the case of Mike Brown, who, in spite of being college bound & well regarded by his community, was portrayed as a “thug” and a “criminal.” For this reason, it is essential that Black people be the ones to tell our own true stories.
Ferguson has experienced media colonization since August 9th; as all eyes turned to the protests, the Grand Jury, and the response to the non-indictment, people became desensitized by the scenes of chaos. The image of Mike Brown’s tragic final moment, pants low, one shoe strewn across the street, became a meme. The victim, a young boy with a bright future, became an object of discussion -subject to apathy,  judgment, and even ridicule, but rarely compassion.  The dehumanization of Mike Brown was perpetrated by his murderer, perpetuated by the media, and reinforced by violent police repression of his community.  This was a modern day lynching.
We are intimately aware of how we are portrayed in the media and how this portrayal encourages both conscious and unconscious racial bias. We are uniquely suited to make this film because we ourselves are organizers, activists and we are deeply connected to the events of August 9th and beyond. We are making this film, in part, as tribute to our people—our deeply complex, courageous, flawed, powerful, and ever hopeful people—who dare to dream of brighter days. This is more than a documentary…this is a story we personally lived. This is our story to tell.

“I thought he had a gun in his hand,”
Yanez said later.
Yanez feared for his life, he said,
and the lives of his partner
as well as the two passengers in the car:
Castile’s girlfriend and her young daughter.

Recounting the shooting the following day, Yanez said:

noun: panic

1. sudden uncontrollable fear or anxiety, often causing wildly unthinking behavior.

X

A panic attack is a sudden episode of intense fear
that triggers severe physical reactions
when there is no real danger or apparent cause.
Panic attacks can be very frightening.
When panic attacks occur,
you might think you’re losing control,
having a heart attack or even dying.
MAYO CLINIC

Panic sends a massive amount of cortisol
to course through the body
causing a fight or flight reaction.
A person’s sudden reaction demonstrates +  discloses
their primal  blueprint/character/biases – a construct.

Imagine the FEAR/PANIC
of  the driver, Philando Castile,
the passenger, Diamond Reynolds,
with their passenger in the back seat,
Diamond’s 4 year old daughter,
when they were pulled over by Officer Yanez that evening
– KNOWING the “drill”  reactivity/ brutal reality of
the blue uniform and the black male driver in America.
They were to be served and protected by the blue uniform
– the “expectation” of ALL Americans.

Imagine the FEAR/ PANIC of  the NRA for
( Hahaha)
not stepping UP for their dedication of  the 2nd Amendment
and
their truth by action:
the gross neglect / conscious abandonment of a licensed gun owner
– Philando Castile.

Stand Your Ground:
 Sybrina And Tracy Martin Fight
For Justice For Trayvon

26 June 2013

Florida’s so-called “stand your ground” law will be tested in the courts this week.

In this report, Sybrina and Tracy Martin talk about their struggle

to deal with a life without their son and their fight for justice.

Travyon Martin was an unarmed teenager who was shot

by a neighborhood watchman, George Zimmerman,

on his way back from a grocery store.

His death sparked outrage in the Black community across the U.S.

Church leaders, protesters, athletes and celebrities showed their support by wearing hoodies,

the connotation-laden article of clothing that sealed Travyon’s fate.

 Artist Catherine L. Johnson,

whose studio is beside the Mississippi River

in Lowertown St. Paul, Minnesota,

also used 40 loaned hoodies worldwide

in very special way.

MINT PRESS’ contributing writer, Jo Erickson,

a BBC investigative reporter/ documentary producer

interviewed the artist, Catherine L. Johnson, on 24 May 2013.

SHOUT OUT FOR HOODIES
7 APRIL 2012

+

30 March 2012

Pamela Espeland for MINNPOST:

In response to the tragic shooting of Trayvon Martin

and the stupidity of Geraldo Rivera,

St. Paul artist Catherine L. Johnson has issued a call for hoodies:

white, gray, or black, used and not laundered.

The loaned hoodies will become an installation

in the fourth-floor hallway
of the Northern Warehouse on Prince Street
during the St. Paul Spring Art Crawl, April 27-29.

This has the potential to make a powerful statement.

FORTY hoodies were loaned worldwide.

The red hoodie signified Trayvon Martin.

Humanity has a heart.

All of us have a heart and blood

circulating oxygen so we can think, call, respond and breathe

the color red is humanity’s universal color.

Each hoodie was suspended by a wire 109″ from the ground, hovering,

with the cap down and toe tags identifying each loaner.

THE HALL OF LAMENT: STAND YOUR GROUND FOR TRAYVON MARTIN

my

RESPONSE.

It was an elegy.

At that time, my nephew, my brother’s eldest son,

Lake, was the same age as Trayvon-a teenage boy I never met..

I was in London.

I had NOT seen Lake for 8 years.

There is a knock on the door at 1 am.

I was waiting for his return.

I open the door:

there is a tall male figure wearing

a wet

black hoodie

with his head down.

It was raining.

I did NOT know who this man was.

My  initial reaction was confusion and fear.

I waited.

The teenager boy lifted his head.

It was my nephew.

On that day in 1968,
he was in the city to lead
a peaceful march
of striking city sanitation workers
I Am A Man sanitation workers assemble
and
 headed from there to
Washington D.C.
to launch his

“Poor People’s Campaign.”

I have a dream
that my four little children
will one day live in a nation
where they will not be judged
by the color of their skin,
but
by the
content of their character.”

where he stands in moments of

but
where he stands at times

What does

“ENOUGH IS ENOUGH”

mean?

What does it mean when it is spoken

 from multiple points of view

of an event,

of a beholden value and belief system,

a relationship,

a social contract,

an institution?

X

X

X

Does

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH

mean:

This is the last straw, no further discourse?

I do not want to listen.

I do NOT want to be bothered,

I do NOT want to break open

and

be asked/need

to change?

I cannot afford to revolutionize

the practiced, habitual way

I have acted and/or reacted in the world?

X

X

X

Is it a code, a threat? Does it instill fear?
Is it a bully’s chastisement?

X

X

X

Is it a surrender?
I am opened and I ask for clearsight?
I am humbled.
I need a new path, I cannot do this alone?

X

X

X

Is it a rally call,
where you step up
because you must
and
a moment, an awakening,
 becomes a movement;
becomes a paradigm shift;
becomes a tectonic plate shift;
becomes a tsunami;
becomes a new Universe;
becomes a new world;
becomes a new nation;
becomes a new city;
becomes a new community;
becomes a new neighborhood;
becomes a new friend;
becomes a new blueprint;
becomes a new template;
becomes a new practice;
becomes a new pattern;
  becomes a new social choreography;
becomes a new prayer;
becomes a new vision;
becomes a new reality;
becomes a new you;
 and
 you possess the moral courage
 to ride out the ambiguity
and
the uncertainty of change
and
you choose to dedicate yourself
to the on-going improvisation
of
an authentic renewal and r/evolution?

X

X

X

And, you break open

and

 leap into the experience,

 the energy

and

 volume

 of:

faith,

grace

and

love.

X

X

X

I have been threatened for standing my ground
for my upcoming multi-media art installation!

X

“…YOU better get security around YOU!
YOU racist!
YOU race-baiting racist.
YOU call yourself an artist?
Enough is enough, YOU…”

X

X

X

It is my heart,

the sacred breath,

in me

that must be

the clarion

that blows the

walls

of

Jericho

 down.

X

X

X

My
upcoming

THE HALL OF LAMENT:

STAND YOUR GROUND

 FOR

TRAYVON MARTIN

installation
is
NOT
a
memorial.

X

X

X

It is a CALL OUT!

X

X

No one can now

H  E  L  P   H  E  L  P

Trayvon’s
  unheeded wails.

X

X

X

He is dead.

X

X

X

He is in God’s hands.

X

X

X

We can say

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH

and resolve
to create
a  NEW blueprint, a NEW template, a NEW model
to imprint
new neuro-pathways*
as
freeways
of
civility
and
the content
of
your
character
prevails
and
THAT
energy
fuels
the
future.

X
X
X

The brain is made up of cells called neurons.
These cells have nerve endings called synapses and dendrites.
Nerve endings release chemical and electrical stimuli
to communicate with each other.
This brain communication forms neuro-pathways
in the brain and is the basis for how the brain works.

X

X

X

When you initially learn something the pathway
or connection is weak.

X

X

X

The more frequently you think

a particular thought

 the stronger the pathway becomes,

forming an automatic habit of thinking.

We call this brain training.

X

X

X

THIS IS POWERFUL!

THE BRAIN IS PLASTIC!

X

X

X

I HAD TO TEACH MYSELF HOW TO WALK
WHEN I WAS AN ADULT
AFTER MY HIP WAS REPLACED.

X

X

X

I HAD TO CRASH HABITS
AND
BE ENTIRELY WILLING TO LEARN
A NEW WAY OF WALKING.

X

X

X

MY BODY HAD WALKED THE SAME WAY
SINCE
I LEARNED HOW TO WALK AT 3 YEARS OLD
IN CRUTCHES WEIGHED  DOWN
WITH  A HEAVY
PLASTER CAST ON MY RIGHT LEG.

X

X

X

I PRACTICED
THAT  SAME HABITUAL WAY
OF WALKING
FOR DECADES.

X

X

X

MY HIP WAS REPLACED
( my 39th reconstructive surgery)
ON 26 MAY 1999.

X

X

X

MY BODY WENT INTO  TOTAL  SEISMIC REVOLT.

X

X

X

SEVERAL YEARS LATER,
WITH
DETERMINATION, BELIEF, FAITH
 AND
VISION
COMPOUNDED
WITH A SUPPORTIVE,
TRUTHFUL CIRCLE
OF
FRIENDS AND ADVISERS,

I MOVE IN A NEW WAY.

X

X

X

YET,
IT IS AN ON-GOING PROCESS
AND
IMPROVISATION
OF
MY
COMMITMENT
TO
CONTINUOUS

AWAKENINGS.

X

X

X

THE R/EVOLUTION

WAS

AGONIZING

AND

LIBERATING.

X

X

X

I BELIEVE

WE ARE NOT FALLING.

X

X

X

WE CAN CHOOSE

TO

RISE,

TO

RISE,

TO

RISE.

X

X

X

AMERICA MUST RISE TO INSTITUTIONALIZED RACISM.
