My art is an experience.
The experience is an encounter.
The encounter is a revelation.
The revelation is an epiphany.
The epiphany is the sacred universality of our humanity.

In commemoration of Hurricane Katrina.

Ten years ago,
the devastating impact/decision making of our American government
revealed to the world
the existence of  our raw systemic/structural injustices of race and poverty,
and,
the American delta city of New Orleans,
renown for its heart; charm; fleur-de-lis and creative genius,
was the irreversible graphic image/evidence of this irrefutable fact.

Early in the morning on August 29, 2005,

Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast of the United States.

When the storm made landfall, it had a Category 3 rating on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale

it brought sustained winds of 100–140 miles per hour

–and stretched some 400 miles across.

New Orleans,

in turn,

showed the world the meaning of

resilience

and

the spiraling life force

of

what it means to prevail

no matter the tempest

like the pine tree.

X

X

X

X

X

The healing and restoration is still a clarion, a spiraling force, moving forward

as a mighty river, a heal/thy artery that fuels the  body & soul.

In the week following

the physical/psychic horror and inhumanity,

I created the Pine Tree: HOPE series

as a luminous prayer for/to

hold up to the light

the survivors in that time of deafening despair + terror.

The work calls out Martin Buber’s distinction between

the I-Thou relationship

and

the I-It relationship.

The sacred Thou in all.

No we v. the other.

The practice of the Golden Rule which is empathy.

X

X

X

The first

Pine Tree: HOPE 2005

 was exhibited at

Holly Hunt, Minneapolis,

from September- December 2005.
Christine Hartman,
General Manager of Holly Hunt, Minneapolis,
selected the work for the showroom.

” My works are visual/sonic compositions/choreographs
that can be heard
with the naked revelation

of an open palm:

unfolding in time and space,

what appears monumental is intimate

 and

what is intimate is monumental.

X

My works need an ACTUAL encounter to experience their VITALITY

-like bearing witness to LIVE performances

rather listening to online clips.

X

X

X
The MOON: Aerial MINES portfolio was created in sequence,
like the waves exhaling toward the shoreline

and

inhaling back into the depths of the sea.

X
It was a long jam session in a recording studio-no edits,
a majestic high dive from a place on the moon to the moon within you:
waning + waxing, dancing + spinning
a slow curtain closing and opening
to reveal
the depth of luminosity and the shine of darkness…”

“There is no such thing

as a good painting

about nothing.”

Gottlieb and Rothko, 1943

X

X

X

X

Abstraction is a territory heavily explored,

but as an expression of individual psyches,

the territory is never-ending.

The unrelenting appeal of abstraction

is also due to the archetypes found there,

as the private world of the mind

always slips toward the universal.

This combination of unique expression and primordial patterns

attract our attention,

informs our humanness.

X

X

The exhibition’s title,

THE AUTOMATIC MESSAGE,

is taken from Andre Breton,

poet and spokesperson of the surrealist movement

in the early 20th century.

He used,The Automatic Message’

to describe a free-association form of writing done

without any premeditation and undirected

by conscious thought

in order to express

the subconscious mind.

X

X

It would be another 25 years

before abstract painting came into its own,

but when it did,

it took the art world by storm.

Since that time, visual art has moved

through other forms of abstraction

–as text or pure concept.

X

X

X

INSTINCT’S exhibit follows the original idea,

THE AUTOMATIC MESSAGE,

in the visual domain.
