Westminster Town Hall Forum:

Dr. Victoria Sweet

speaks

about

“Slow Medicine”

https://www.victoriasweet.com/

A

radical

new understanding

of how medicine

is

best practiced.

Over the years that Victoria Sweet has been a physician, “healthcare” has replaced medicine, “providers” look at their laptops more than at their patients, and costs keep soaring, all in the ruthless pursuit of efficiency.
Yet the remedy that economists and policy makers continue to miss is also miraculously simple. Good medicine takes more than amazing technology; it takes time–time to respond to bodies as well as data, time to arrive at the right diagnosis and the right treatment.
Sweet knows this because she has learned and lived it over the course of her career. Here she relates unforgettable stories of the teachers, doctors, nurses, and patients through whom she discovered the practice of Slow Medicine, in which she has been a pioneer. Medicine, she makes us see, is a craft and an art as well as a science. It is relational, personal, even spiritual. To do it well requires a hard-won wisdom that no algorithm can replace–that brings together “fast” and “slow” in a truly effective, efficient, sustainable, and humane way of healing.

Finding Deep Strength
Below The Surface

X

by Madisyn Taylor/DAILYOM

When we look back on our lives we see that we have survived many trials and often to our own amazement.

X

We have all faced moments in our lives when the pressure mounts beyond what we feel we can handle, and we find ourselves thinking that we do not have the strength to carry on. Sometimes we have just gotten through a major obstacle or illness only to find another one waiting for us the moment we finally catch our breath. Sometimes we endure one loss after another, wondering when we will get a break from life’s travails. It does not seem fair or right that life should demand more of us when we feel we have given all we can, but sometimes this is the way life works.

X

When we look back on our lives, we see that we have survived many trials and surmounted many obstacles, often to our own amazement. In each of those instances, we had to break through our ideas about how much we can handle and go deeper into our hidden reserves. The thought that we do not have the strength to handle what is before us can be likened to the hard surface of a frozen lake. It appears to be an impenetrable fact, but when we break through it, we find that a deep well of energy and inspiration was trapped beneath that icy barrier the whole time. Sometimes we break through by cutting a hole into our resistance with our willpower, and sometimes we melt the ice with compassion for our predicament and ourselves. Either way, each time we break through, we reach a new understanding of the strength we store within ourselves.

X

When we find ourselves up against that frozen barrier of thinking we cannot handle our situation, we may find that the kindest choice is to love ourselves and our resistance too. We can simply accept that we are overwhelmed, exhausted, and stretched, and we can offer ourselves loving kindness and compassion. If we can extend to ourselves the unconditional warmth of a mother’s love, before we know it, the ice will begin to break.

25 MAY 2016:
ONE month post-op of the prosthetic/joint implants into my ART HAND.
Surgery #47.

X

26 MAY 1999:
17th anniversary of my first total hip prosthetic/joint implant of my right hip.
I had to lie back @120 degrees for 8 weeks so the implant to set into my precarious bone.
I finally was receiving the “gift” of my beloved Dr. Mark Coventry’s revolutionary innovation:
the prosthetic hip joint- which has altered the vision of lived mobility forever.
Dr. Rodney Peterson was the selected surgeon.
My Dr. Coventry’s soul had gone over the rainbow
– but, he was PRESENT and WATCHING OVER!
I created Catherine’s Courageous Compassion Circle: a GOLD circle; a SILVER circle and a BRONZE circle
– friends that stepped up and entered this wilderness: a challenging and a pivotal vortex of healing
with their kindness, their honor and their constancy of loving presence.

X

My Uncle Bob Cottor ( Dr. Robert Cottor) was at the helm as I began this uncertain/high risk climb
to a summit of an OVER THE RAINBOW dream.
My Aunt Sharon, Bob’s wife/partner, was fully present in the distance.

X

Of course, the sonics of Charles Lloyd set the tone in THIS pivotal surgical procedure of magnitude.
Charles’ sonics have been in EVERY OR ever since
EXCEPT for once: when my right knee was reconstructed:
my friend Connie Evingson’s  SWEET HAPPY LIFE album filled the OR!

X

Healing is like music- it cannot be created in an empty vacuum.
Healing occurs within the invited souls’ energy of intentional and the scintillating
improvisational capacity to create the rhythm, beauty
and a palpable frequency of compassionate  LIGHTLOVEGRACE.
Yes, that is how it works: ensembles.
The Wounded is also the Healer within the ensemble because the wounded
invisibly calls out the LIGHTLOVEGRACE within the souls of those attending.
A concert.
A performance.
A Tibetan prayer wheel.
A dance.

Creating these drawings/collages/mix-tapes/ dance charts of color in motion
is keeping me A/LIVE.
My ART HAND/ right hand/ is a reluctant bystander and gasps
at the wild renderings of my left hand.
I can actually “feel” my brain heat up as I work.
Surprising.
Fascinating.
Beautiful.

Exhilarating!

Fifteen days post-op.
My NON-ART hand is thoroughly a 4 year old WILD child!
I draw with this WILD hand on large boards- grasping onto  fine art colored pencils.
AWAY we go! I simply watch!
I then cut the boards with my late Mother’s 53 year old paper cutter
using my ART HAND’s forearm to push the blade down
as the WILD child holds the board in position.
I then arrange/compose the parts- akin to creating a mix-tape or editing a film.
The finished works dance, FLY and sing and do 4 year old JOY– and, keeps my LIGHT on.

X

Last night, a friend looked at the 6 LEFTMINGCOBALT works.
He remarked: “These are drones and extra-terrestials!”
The cobalt blue used in the exquisite porcelains of the Ming Dynasty came from Persia.
I was a double major: Chinese History and Studio Art as an undergraduate: an ancient soul explorer.

First works after my ART HAND,my right hand, was reconstructed on 25 April 2016.
Very humbling.
I am NOT left handed nor ambidextrous.
My Mother encouraged me to become an artist
– and, my right hand became my BREATH/ my WING/my FREEDOM song.
It is appropriate that I would create on THIS day, 8 May 2016, Mother’s Day,
in her honor and in gratitude.

X

Special thank you to my brother Blake, Bob + Steph, and Nancy
for “watching over” me of the first 10 days after the 5 procedures- 3 hour surgery.
Thank you to my brother Blake as well as Mike, Aliyah + Alicia
for watching over my English Springer, Jaspar Obi, in my absence.
Thank you to Beaumont for taking Jaspar out 2x day for walks
while my ART HAND heals for the next several weeks.

X
X
X

Thank you/shout OUT to Dr. Clare McCarthy-
a remarkable/genius hand surgeon who “gets it” with her constant empathy.
She KNOWS the significance and irreplaceable life force of my ART hand.
The same shout OUT to Claire Joubert, P. A., and Susan.
Dr. Clare McCarthy’s team is gold standard superb!

There is a spectrum of surgeons:

from the exhausting check off the boxes job position

My  selected and welcomed surgeons are charitable explorers

With the unique algebra of my body’s musculoskeletal system,

I carefully filter and, then select my dance card partner/surgeons by:

their poetic, adventurous and keen intelligence,

their improvisational skills,

their creative courage to envision a blueprint, a map, of a wilderness of a place

that they have had no previous training to enter with all of its uncertainty and risk,

their leadership capacity to work collaboratively

their uncanny ability to call out the genius within each of their colleagues with the

non-hierarchical vehicle of a roundtable;

their honesty;

their integrity

and

their humanity.

Dr. Coventry asked me to make two promises to him before he died:

“Promise me TWO things.

ONLY

let those who honor + respect you come near

+

ALWAYS

 remain an artist!”

PLEASE NOTE:
THE RED CIRCLE BEATS
RHYTHMICALLY LIKE A

HEART BEAT.

THE IMAGERY IS A PATH, A PULSE.
WHEN THE IMAGE UNFOLDS or VANISHES,
THE

MEMORY OF THE IMAGE GLOWS

– LIKE AUTHENTIC LOVE

WHICH TIME + SPACE CAN

NEVER

SEVER.

IMPRINTED + EMBEDDED

FOREVER.

I AM SO GRATEFUL FOR THE

MEN/tors WHO ENTERED MY LIFE

BEARING/OFFERING

TRUTHS/LOVE/HOPE.
