“Some children have an uncanny sense of their destiny.

As a boy,
John Lewis loved
William Ernest Henley’s poem

Invictus.”

His sister Ethel Mae Tyner once told an interviewer that
she remembered her big brother reciting it around the house.

In the fell clutch of circumstance

I have not winced nor cried aloud.

Under the bludgeonings of chance

My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Could the boy reciting those lines have imagined
that he would famously endure vicious beatings by white supremacists?
That he would survive,
and go on to serve more than three decades in Congress?
Lewis, who died Friday at age 80,
was one of 10 children raised by sharecropper parents in Pike County, Ala.
As I have learned while working on his biography,
Lewis always loved to read — comic books,
the Bible and, as a teenager, the Montgomery Advertiser.
In its pages he absorbed the thrilling news in 1955
of the Montgomery bus boycott
and
its 26-year-old leader and apostle of nonviolence,
the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.”

INVICTUS

Out of the night that covers me
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance,
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

A STORY of THREE INDIVIDUALS

KINDNESS WARMS
HONORING INTEGRITY
IMPROVISATIONAL HUMANITY
15 January 2020

X

X

X

The Ross Frame Shop

Minneapolis, Mn

X

In Jim’s* own words
(*dear, dear, dear friend + my selected framer who knows the breath and dance of my art)

of his

special poignant encounter

with a

6 year old boy

on
15 January 2020.

X

“A Mother and little boy came into the shop

towards closing.

I asked if she was her to “pick up”?
She said no,
her son wanted to come in to meet me and see the shop.

X

I smiled and introduced myself to him,
shook his hand
and said,

WOW!

I used to have choppers (leather mittens) just like yours!
Keeps your hands nice and warm, I remember.
He smiled and agreed.

x

I then told him I have been here a long time
and
some of my customers children have already grown up,
and
they are even in their 40’s now!
The mom was amazed
and
I asked her to imagine her son as a 30 year old man,
if she could.
She said she could not!
I said, “Enjoy his age now,

he’s a wonderful six

but kids have a way of growing up before you know it.”
We talked about art
and
I said I have been doing this for a very long time,
and
what’s incredible, I still enjoy what I do!

I told the little boy to find something he loves

and
try to make that happen.

X

X

I told them their visit to my shop

made my day,

and
gave him some picture frame magnets to hold photos,
and
said they were welcome back anytime.

X
X

This all came about from a little guy

looking out the school bus window
and

seeing me

day after day,
sometimes not,
and

wanted to know who I was!!!

Amazing! “

X

The title of Ava DuVernay’s extraordinary and galvanizing documentary
refers to the 13th Amendment to the Constitution,
which reads:

“Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude,

except as a punishment for crime whereof the party

shall have been duly convicted,

shall exist within the United States.”

X

X

The progression from that second qualifying clause
to the horrors of mass criminalization
and the sprawling American prison industry
is laid out by DuVernay with bracing lucidity.

X

With a potent mixture of archival footage
and testimony from a dazzling array of activists,
politicians, historians, and formerly incarcerated women and men,

DuVernay creates a work of grand historical synthesis.

“What I Saw at Selma”

King’s genius was that he knew when to thwart the law—and when to obey it.

March 07, 2015

My Mother’s cousin, Emmy Lou aka Clare, was married to Harris Wofford.
Their marriage was a vow and a partnership for social justice and civil rights.

“Martin Luther King Jr. liked to joke that I was the one member of his legal team
who would help him go to jail rather than using all the tricks of the trade to keep him out.
I’d originally connected with King after returning from travels in India in 1949, soon after Gandhi was assassinated.
My wife and I had followed Gandhi’s trail and gotten to know many of his supporters.
And while I was learning everything I could about Mahatma Gandhi, King was doing the same…”

“…This weekend, we mark half a century since Martin Luther King Jr. led the famous march from Selma to Montgomery, the last of three marches begun in Selma, Alabama, in March of 1965 to champion a voting rights act. But it would be a mistake to remember only that third march, which triumphantly reached the capitol steps in Montgomery—or the first terrible march, which ended in “Bloody Sunday” on the Edmund Pettus Bridge. To fully appreciate King’s skill as a leader, we need to remember the second march—the one that was cut short when King made the hard decision to comply with a temporary federal court injunction prohibiting a march and turn back to Selma instead of continuing on to Montgomery. At that pivotal moment, the quintessential American advocate of civil disobedience chose to obey the law blocking his path. And in so doing, King paved the way for the successful third march and then passage of the Voting Rights Act five months later…”

Afraid of what Selma holds for him, King makes a late-night call to his friend

and fellow freedom fighter Mahalia Jackson

and asks her to share “the Lord’s voice” with him.

She answers by singing his favorite gospel song,

Take My Hand, Precious Lord.”
