In the United States, women, children, individuals of color, those who live in low income economic classes and those who are differently-abled KNOW that their truth-telling stories,  no matter their personal integrity and their capacity/pattern of eloquently telling the truth of their life experiences, are invalidated. Their credibility is not upheld, and is, in fact, they are shamed, silenced, judged, taunted and shredded. Actually, the truth-tellers, whose stories counter the dominant culture, are the definition and testament of COURAGE, moral courage, who SEE a universe of greater humanity.

X

As Brene Brown said in her viral TED Talk: “Empathy’s the antidote to shame. If you put shame in a Petri dish, it needs three things to grow exponentially: secrecy, silence and judgment. If you put the same amount in a Petri dish and douse it with empathy, it can’t survive. The two most powerful words when we’re in struggle: me too.”

NOTE: The Republicans on the Judicial Committee have now POSITIONED Brett Kavanaugh as a partisan prop for their specific political agenda. Brett Kavanaugh has ALLOWED himself to be made into a partisan prop by them – taking away any redemption of possible humility within his character. Brett Kavanaugh has agreed to eliminate his capacity to respond as a human. Imagine what would have occurred IF he spoke of his drunken teenage years at an elite all boys prep school. I do know heavy alcohol drinkers have selective memories and are champions of denial,  lash out and blame those who call them out on their behavior and their justifying explanations are obfuscation coupled with empty and repetition of excuses. No healing enters , but, rather a continuum of wounding ensues. Trapped. Tribalism based on distrust of the “other”. Thick institutionalism.

Imagine what would occur IF an individual asking for sincere forgiveness from those they have injured, owning up/being accountable to causing injury by their words and/or actions and making actual amends WAS the definition of VALIANT courage and the PINNACLE of character. IMAGINE the sincere and the joyous energy of FREEDOM ringing through hearts and our humanity and our world IF this was the practice! Gas-lighting as a manipulation to undermine the victim of the abuse and the wide/deep collateral damage of cycles of abuse would cease! NEW worlds would EMERGE! Relationships, true authentic relationships, are slowly built, face to face, the sacred DANCE of evolving/dialectical TRUST – with empathy and reverence. Lives are relational! This ethos and intimate practice would be/is a revolution of overturning tribalism and would be/is a redemption/transcendent fusion story of SEEING the other. A re-negotiation of power that honors the fire and width of humanity and extinguishes the lashing, cruel and hostile burn of divisive tribalism. This would be/ IS sweeping radiant JOY!

“Let us realize

the arc

of the moral universe

is long

but it bends

toward justice.”

The Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

X

Truths told by marginalized demographics simply do not resonate with the values of the dominant culture and are dismissed. The truths told do not serve the values of the dominant culture. Praise those who summon the courage to step up and tell the truth of their personal experiences which, in turn, inspires others that their own life experiences are testaments of life – valuable and worthy.

X

The Kavanaugh SCOTUS hearings is THE truth-telling of our current society.

X

Democracy is improvisational blueprint — moving forward with NEW perspectives. A vital ongoing process of rising and constantly adapting, improvising, overcoming > an innovative experiment of inventing and creation! We know the process of suppression of truth telling of specific demographics is the graph, the litmus test, of where our society is.

X

The US president and the current Republican representatives on the Judicial Committee is echoed in Carl Dreyer’s 1928 silent film.

X

The clip below of Carl Dreyer’s film, “The Passion of Joan of Arc”  is, tragically, heart-stopping  and relevant to our contemporaneous lives. This film is genius – SILENT – no voices and no subtitles. The visuals of Dreyer’s cinematography, film editing, casting and direction are intentional and silently NAMES the dominant culture at that time and the power hierarchy. Of course, the irony is that HER truth-telling is silenced, prosecuted, judged and she is burned at the stake for her truth- telling.

Why Women Don’t Report Sexual Assault

As new allegations surface about Brett Kavanaugh,
readers discuss the underreporting of sex crimes,
prep school culture and more.
https://www.nytimes.com/2018/09/24/opinion/letters/kavanaugh-sexual-assault.html

Why didn’t you report? Shame, shame, shame

What a rehearsed “read the teleprompter” and using your wife as a prop!
He is a good acolyte of the president – his mentor of lying and repeating mantras.

PAINFUL to watch this display of a coached “player”.

Playing Agent Orange’s playbook of being a victim
– this strategy  is a dog whistle
to enrage men in our society.
A woman challenging a man is deemed as humiliating
– the woman is from OUTSIDE the privileged and elite world of power.
Women in that world are mama bears protecting their men’s ego
rather than an expectation for the man
to step up and be accountable.

DIGNITY + RESPECT

Think of the converse – our society protecting women
who counter the dominant culture’s speak/practice.

CATHERINE L. JOHNSON ARTIST18SEPT2013

18 SEPTEMBER 2013

Roberta Flack
TO DREAM THE IMPOSSIBLE DREAM
My ANTHEM as a young girl.

+

rene marie
rene marie
STRONGER THAN YOU THINK YOU ARE

+

Mahalia Jackson
HOW I GOT OVER

+

JOAN BAEZ
WE SHALL OVERCOME
My mantra…

+

NEW BEGINNINGS WHEN ONE MUST LEAVE TO BREATHE AGAIN
THE END BECOMES THE BEGINNING BECOMES THE END
A WHIRLING  SPIRAL TOWARD
CLEAR SIGHT
ALIVE
INHALE/EXHALE

+

I AIN’T GOING BACK

  GOD ALMIGHTY

  I AM FREE AT LAST

MY BREATH, MY BONE, MY MARROW,
MY LIFE + MY ART

NEEDS

FREE WIDE OPEN WINGS + A PLACE WHERE CREATIVITY
REIGNS
WHERE EXPLORATION + DIALOGUE
TOWARD
TRUTH
 INSPIRES

+

NO SHELL GAMES.
NO MANIPULATION.
NO SILENCING.
NO  MIND GAMES.
NO CUTTING THE THROAT
TO SILENCE
BY INTIMIDATION.
NO BULLYING.
NO FEAR.
NO LIES.
NO DUCT TAPED MOUTHS.
NO THREATS.

+

I NEED,
AS A HUMAN AND AN ARTIST,
 THE PEACE TO DISCERN;
RESPECT;
HONOR;
BEAUTY;
LIGHT;
TO BE ABLE TO HAVE SOLITUDE;
A HARBOR OF SOLITUDE;
AND
A BOWL OF ROSES.
PLEASE.

+

MY DEDICATED COLLECTOR, HENRY ZAIDAN, TOLD ME:
ARTISTS CANNOT CREATE IN FEAR, THEY NEED A HARBOR

+

ARTISTS NEED A HARBOR
WHERE THEY ARE WELCOMED TO CONCENTRATE,
EXPERIMENT,

FREE

TO
LISTEN TO THE INTERNAL SOUND/BLOOM
OF THE
DIVINE RISING WITHIN
IN PEACE,
AND
TO
DISCERN
IF THEIR ART
IS AN ORACLE,
A HURRICANE LAMP,
A CHALLENGE OF OPTICS,
A COMMUNICATION VEHICLE THAT OPENS UP A DIALOGUE,

A CONVERSATION,

OR

NOT.

+

OF COURSE,
THERE IS A LIFESTYLE OF EVERY  INDIVIDUAL ARTIST.
WHAT IS THE  SPOKEN AND/OR UNSPOKEN PRIVILEGE
OF THE
ARTIST’S LIFESTYLE?
CAN THE ARTIST’S LIFESTYLE BE
“USED/PERFORMED”
 TO GARNER FAVOR,
“USING/PERFORMING”
THE SLEIGHT OF THE HAND TO CREATE
SMOKE AND MIRRORS?

+

THE LIFESTYLE DOES NOT MAKE THE ARTIST NOR THE ART.
LOOK AT THE POLITICAL ART OF DEMOCRACIES AND  OF TYRANNIES.

CONVENTIONAL WISDOM.

ALL

ARTISTS

KNOW THIS EQUATION,

THIS COMPROMISE,

THIS COST.

WHAT IS INTEGRITY?

+

WHICH IS AN ART FORM:
VIOLINS AND/OR VIOLENCE?

+

CAN ONE REFINE
VIOLINS AND/OR VIOLENCE?

+

HOW DOES ONE MAKE
THE PLAY OF
VIOLINS AND/OR VIOLENCE
MORE
BEAUTIFUL OR UGLY?

+

CAN VIOLENCE BECOME AN ART FORM?
CAN THE LIFESTYLE OF VIOLENCE BECOME AN ART FORM?

+

WHAT IS THE DIALOGUE, THE TROPES, OF ART + VIOLENCE?
CAN VIOLENCE INSPIRE ART?
IS PRIVATE VIOLENCE ART?
IS PUBLIC EXHIBITION OF VIOLENCE ART?
CAN ART INSPIRE VIOLENCE?

+

THE VIOLENT ACTIONS OF ABU GHRAIB.
THE ACTIONS AND/OR IMAGES OF AMERICAN SOLDIERS
DEHUMANIZING/TORTURING IRAQI PRISONERS.
DID THE BURIED/CLOAKED/ HIDDEN SECRET VIOLENT ACTIONS
OR
THE PUBLIC EXHIBITION OF THE  ABU GHRAIB IMAGES
OF THE SECRET VIOLENT ACTIONS
CREATE
POLITICAL/SOCIAL
REACTION/RESPONSE?
NONCHALANCE OR OUTRAGE?
IS THE IMAGE BELOW BEAUTIFUL TO YOU?

WHAT HAPPENED TO THE ABU GHRAIB

WHISTLEBLOWER?

WHAT WAS THE COST TO THE WHISTLEBLOWER?

DO YOU SEE THE WHISTLEBLOWER

AS A COURAGEOUS PERSON

WHO WITHSTOOD, ENDURED

THE ORGANIZATION OF THE ARMED FORCES?

+

ARE ROBERT MAPPLETHORPE’S PHOTOGRAPHS
BEAUTIFUL
FOR THEIR ART
OR
 THE ART OF HIS LIFESTYLE?

+

DID/DOES PICASSO’S  GUERNICA 1937 INSPIRE VIOLENCE?

CAN YOU “HEAR” THE SHRIEKS?
DID THE SILENT “SHRIEKS” INSPIRE VIOLENCE?
WHAT  POLITICAL/SOCIAL SHIFT DID PICASSO’S GUERNICA CAUSE?
OR,
WAS IT SEEN AS A  BANAL VASE OF FLOWERS?

LEON GOLUB
WAS MY  MFA ADVISER
AT MASON GROSS SCHOOL OF THE ARTS,
RUTGERS UNIVERSITY.
LEON WAS A GENTLE,
KIND, DEFIANT,
ANCIENT SOUL.
HE AND HIS WIFE, NANCY SPERO,
MELDED THEIR ART  LIFESTYLE
AND
 THIER LIFESTYLE OF SOCIAL/POLITICAL ACTIVISM.
 HIS MERCENARY SERIES EXPLORED
THE BLUR OF
THE BEAUTY OF ART FORM
AND
THE SUBJECT OF INHUMANE VIOLENCE.
THE VIEWER IS BOTH ENTRANCED AND HORRIFIED
AT THE ACTUAL THEATRICAL SIZE
AND
THE DIMENSION OF THE VIOLENCE,
THE INHUMANITY.
THE EXPERIENCE OF THE ART WAS THE WITNESSING OF VIOLENCE.
THE PROCESS OF HIS ART MAKING WAS A BOXING MATCH,
A FIGHT- PHYSICAL AND VISCERAL.
Leon Golub’s  paintings depicting hegemonic masculinity.
“Interrogations III”, depict 2 male officers holding down
a nude female while her hands are bound by rope.
It shows the two males in power over a woman
and
shows the dominance over her
and how it establishes them as an elevated human being.
“Interrogation I”, depicts 2 men beating
a man hanging upside down.
it’s showing dominance over another
establishing them as an elevated human being.
The work shows the key ideal of dominance.

These paintings

represent hegemonic masculinity

in showing

the exploitation

of

power and dominance

over another.

Leon, himself as a man,

was a steward/facilitator

of peace and humanity.

It was an honor to work with him.

AS DR. MARK COVENTRY ASKED ME TO PROMISE HIM:

ONLY LET THOSE WHO HONOR + RESPECT YOU COME NEAR

AND

ALWAYS REMAIN AN ARTIST.

+

GRACE.

AMAZING GRACE.

LOST THEN FOUND.

+

WHAT IS MORE OF A CATALYST TO STEP UP
FOR HUMANITY:
THE PHOTOGRAPH OF VIOLENCE,
THE RE-CREATION OF VIOLENCE AS ART,
AND/OR
THE ACTUAL WITNESSING OF VIOLENCE?

+

THERE HAVE BEEN  RESEARCH STUDIES
THAT THE  MERE HEARING,
THE SOUNDS OF VIOLENCE,
OR THE
“SENSING” OF VIOLENCE
EQUALS
THE ACTUAL WITNESSING OF VIOLENCE.
OF COURSE, THIS EFFECTS INJURY.
NOTE THE FILMS:
HOTEL RWANDA, PSYCHO, APOCALYPSE NOW…SNUFF FILMS.
NOTE YOUR OWN LIFE EXPERIENCES.
HAVE YOU BEEN ASSAULTED/VIOLATED?
HAVE YOU WITNESSED AN ASSAULT/VIOLATED?
HAVE YOU HEARD STORIES OF A BELOVED BEING ASSAULTED/VIOLATED?
WHAT ARE THE SCARS
FROM THE DIRECT EXPERIENCE
TO THE LISTENING TO THE STORY
OF THE
ASSAULT/VIOLENCE?

+

THINK: HAMLET
THINK: HAMLET’S DENMARK.

WHAT DID HAMLET DECIDE TO DO?
