My Mom’s soul,

suddenly and unexpectedly,

lifted away from her body

in the early morning hours

of

16 January 1997.

I found her warm body,

blue eyes open

and

her 4 dogs sleeping peacefully

at the end of her bed.

I opened her bedroom door.

There was a golden radiance in her room

that called me to her. 

I opened her mouth and gave her my breath.

I pressed down on her chest.

 

My Mom’s soul had lifted away.

 

I washed her body,

changed her nightgown,

and

combed her hair…

and

prayed for

grace and strength

– knowing I would break

 each of my brothers’ and sisters’ heart.
