The Pine Tree: An Appeal to Heaven series
was created from 1998 -2000.
They were prayers,
invocations to God,
to rise,
to breathe,
to hope,
after the sudden death of my Mother.

I had lost the use of my hands from packing,
packing, lifting, lifting
packing,
lifting, lifting, packing,
lifting, lifting, lifting
packing,
packing, lifting, lifting, lifting,
packing
my Mom’s home
while I was
shot with grief and shock.
My hands
and
congenitally dislocated / incomplete hip joint
crumbled and broke.
X
I had no home
– living illegally in my studio where the heat was off on the weekends.
I took showers at the YMCA.
X
I could only hold a wallpaper brush
as my hands were kept still in braces.
I wrapped my braced hands with plastic.
I had to create.
I painted on back of older work
– creating a white tabula rasa ground.
I drew a line down the center with a 2B pencil.
The brush strokes were rhythmic
– back and forth,
inhale and exhale,
a lullaby.
X
Creating this series kept me alive
– the sacred spark of divinity was buried within me.
I could hear its longing whisper to be found,
its quiet continuous wail:
“Can you hear me?
Please respond.
Come to me.”
