The Lydians were an ancient people who lived in what is now Turkey
during the Iron Age.
The Lydians developed a way to determine the quality of gold
with what is called a Lydian Stone
–flat pieces of basanite.
X
A piece of gold would be dragged across the stone
so that it leaves a scratch mark.
The color of the mark was the objective determinate.
If it looked red, or coppery, the gold was not pure
and
was an alloy.
If the mark was bright yellow, the gold was pure.
The Lydians would make charts for color comparison.

The purity of the gold became visible to those
who knew what to look for
and
who had the capacity to discern
what was pure gold.

TOUCHSTONE
The Lydian Stone has become known by another name:
touchstone.
You touch the gold to the stone,
and
then the value becomes apparent by its mark.

A
touchstone
is used by contemporaneous jewelers to determine
if a gold metal is pure gold or an “illusion of purity”
which is an alloy masterfully blended
with just enough “truth” of gold
mixed with copper and other alloys
to make it appear to look like pure gold.

The lesser qualities of gold
are mixed with copper and other alloys
to make it look like gold, without being pure gold –
that is the difference between 14 karat and 24 karat.

The word,
touchstone,
has evolved over the centuries,
but still
“suggests a simple test of the authenticity
or
value of something intangible.”

The word/construct of
touchstone
is a
beautiful metaphor
to discern/align/sense intuitively/analyze
what is

in other areas of life other than gold metal:
the mark of genius in diverse fields of creative exploration;

the mark of an anam cara in one’s life;
the mark of a revolutionary paradigm shift;
the mark of courage
and
so forth.
