I KNOW WHY THE CAGED BIRD SINGS
The free bird leaps
on the back of the wind
and floats downstream
till the current ends
and dips his wings
in the orange sun rays
and dares to claim the sky.
But a bird that stalks
down his narrow cage
can seldom see through
his bars of rage
his wings are clipped and
his feet are tied
so he opens his throat to sing.
The caged bird sings
with fearful trill
of the things unknown
but longed for still
and his tune is heard
on the distant hill for the caged bird
sings of freedom.
The free bird thinks of another breeze
and the trade winds soft through the sighing trees
and the fat worms waiting on a dawn-bright lawn
and he names the sky his own.
But a caged bird stands on the grave of dreams
his shadow shouts on a nightmare scream
his wings are clipped and his feet are tied
so he opens his throat to sing.
The caged bird sings
with a fearful trill
of things unknown
but longed for still
and his tune is heard
on the distant hill
for the caged bird
sings of freedom.

Hi Catherine! I like your message. I can also identify with it. Sorry for not communicating sooner. I’ve been having difficulty with my Rhupus. Lot’s of pain and immobility. Something I know you understand. I tend to pull inward when I don’t feel well. My doctor at mayo is recommending a new med by infusion. This is my last available treatment. We have run out of choices. Katie is doing well. She was tested for connective tissue disease and they found no indications. Thank god I didn’t pass this on to her! I found something in an art gallery that I would like to send to you. Would you please give me your address…I am unable to locate it. How are things going with your family? Mine continues to be a challenge. How is your healing process? My thoughts and prayers are with you. Love, Connie

Connie dear cousin:
I am so sorry for the density of your current pain and the concurrent immobility. I understand the need to retreat. I have learned I sometimes need to counter this instinct.
Last night, I organized a table at the Dakota to bear witness to the Blind Boys of Alabama! I looooove Gospel! They sang Amazing Grace to the melody of the House of the Rising Sun- quite brilliant! (On Sunday, I went to The Jazz Standards Christmas Show. My dear friend Patty is dating one of the musicians, Chan. We had exceptional seats and…the Christmas story was told Cowboy style! Hilarious and brilliant and daring. The three Magi were cowboys. Baby Jesus was shown on the back drop levitating above the manger to the the singing of “Ring of Fire”.)
The table and the adjoining table looked like Obama’s America- the whole spectrum! It was so wonderful! It was my FIRST night out with my NewKneeME! The fall caused a severe sprain- which has delayed the rehab process. It is hard to be patient- when I have nuclear/solar/lunar energy. Last night fueled me! I was up, IN SPITE OF THE PAIN, clapping! It was so GR8!
I know when you stop moving, your body freezes. I was given the green light for the elliptical- and exercise releases endorphins: natural painkillers. With a few members of my family, I have chosen to let go for the time. It is like going to the same restaurant when you are desiring to be fed and fueled, and later, you come down with food poisoning. Whammo! One is delirious from the sucker punch. At some point, one must not make reservations and have hopes for ones needs to be met at THAT restaurant! No more suckerete ( female version of a sucker) for me! Habits and expectations. I cannot change anyone. Yet, I can walk away from the bowling alley…
I have a gift for you.
My thoughts and prayers are with you. I am so relieved about your Katie. You have passed on your gold traits to her- lucky young woman!
You are loved.
